Château Lynch-Bages
Our relationship with the Cazes family of Château Lynch-Bages spans generations. In many ways, they are synonymous with Pauillac – one of the reasons we asked them to make our excellent value Berry’s Own Selection bottling. As for the Grand Vin, it so often defies its fifth growth status that it’s one of the few glaring errors of the 1855 classification. When you consider the location of the vineyards, perfectly situated on a gravel plateau, over limestone, in the small village of Bages, you begin to understand why. We agree wholeheartedly with the inimitable Oz Clarke: “Lynch-Bages is impressive at five years, beautiful at ten years, and irresistible at twenty”. Here we’ve put together a fantastic collection of vintages dating back to 1996 so you can test this for yourself.

Riesling
Few grapes capture both delicacy and intensity like Riesling. Celebrated for its perfumed aromatics and razor-sharp acidity, this noble variety is capable of a remarkable range: from bone-dry, mineral-driven whites to unctuous, long-lived sweet wines. Whether grown on the slate slopes of Germany, the volcanic hills of Alsace, or the sunlit vineyards of the New World, Riesling expresses a sense of place like no other grape.

Sauvignon Blanc
An important white grape in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley that has now found fame in New Zealand and now Chile. It thrives on the gravelly soils of Bordeaux and is blended with Sémillon to produce fresh, dry, crisp Bordeaux Blancs, as well as more prestigious Cru Classé White Graves. It is also blended with Sémillon, though in lower proportions, to produce the great sweet wines of Sauternes. It performs well in the Loire Valley and particularly on the well-drained chalky soils found in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where it produces bone dry, highly aromatic, racy wines, with grassy and sometimes smoky, gunflint-like nuances.

Chardonnay
Chardonnay is arguably the most versatile white grape variety in the world. Grown globally and beloved for its adaptability, it can produce wines that range from crisp and mineral to rich and opulent. It thrives in a wide range of soils but performs best in limestone-rich terroirs, such as those found in Chablis, Champagne, and the Côte d'Or.

Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating and, at times, infuriating wine grape in the world. However, when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape, which grows in small, tight bunches, performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone-based subsoils. It is more susceptible than other varieties to overcropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive, and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of Burgundy's Côte d'Or.

Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region. A notoriously pernickety grape, it requires sheltered south-facing sites and performs best on the well-drained calcareous marls to the north and south of Alba in the DOCG zones of Barbaresco and Barolo.

That might be a single celebrated cask from a bygone era, a rare legacy from a famous ‘ghost’, or an unusual barrel with a rare flavor profile. All these highly collectable drams have fascinating stories to tell. The latest in this collection marks a pivotal moment in our own history – the opening of our US business in Washington, DC. To celebrate, we’ve bottled two single Hogsheads which rank among the oldest and rarest whiskies we’ve bottled to date – a 46-year-old Teaninich and a 51-year-old ‘Secret’ Speyside. They both show ‘Washington, D.C. Edition’ on the label and are only available through our US business. We opened a bottle of each at our launch, so we have just 155 pairs remaining…

Whiskies
We’ve been at the forefront of the whisky industry for centuries. Our first own-label cask bottling was in 1853, making us one of Britain’s oldest independent spirits bottlers - a tradition that we continue to this day. Cognac
Cognac is a grape brandy produced in the French region of the same name. The permitted grape varieties include Ugni Blanc (predominantly), Folle Blanche and Colombard. According to the appellation regulations, Cognac must be distilled twice in traditionally shaped Charentais copper pot stills and aged at least two years in French oak.

Rum
Rum is made from sugarcane juice or molasses, one of the few strict rules regarding this versatile spirit. Our collection includes bottlings from the Caribbean, Central and South America, and islands in the Indian Ocean. Their styles vary from light and fruity to dark and rich.
