About Berry Bros. & Rudd

Founded in 1698, Berry Bros. & Rudd is the oldest wine and spirits merchant in the UK. To this day, it remains family-run; now, we’re delighted to have opened our doors in Washington, DC.

We’ve been helping wine and spirits lovers find the world’s
rarest and most prized bottles for centuries. Now, it’s time for us to do the
same in America. Thanks to our longstanding relationships with iconic producers, we’re the go-to for anyone looking to collect or enjoy world-class bottles.

Our history

Our story began when the Widow Bourne opened a small shop opposite St. James's Palace in London. Her family supplied the city’s fashionable coffee houses under the
now-iconic “Sign of the Coffee Mill.” By the early 1800s, George Berry had guided the business toward fine wines and spirits.

In the early 1900s, the Rudd family joined the firm, forming the enduring partnership that continues today. Together, the families refined their craft and global reputation. In 1923, they introduced Cutty Sark Scotch Whisky, whose distinctive character and design made it an international success, particularly across the Atlantic during Prohibition.

Through world wars, changing tastes, and global expansion, Berry Bros. & Rudd has remained a family business defined by integrity, knowledge, and exceptional quality. We pioneered the UK’s first temperature-controlled wine cellars in 1967, launched the pioneering bbr.com in 1994, and expanded across Europe and Asia.

In 2025, Berry Bros. & Rudd opened its first-ever US store in Washington, DC, marking a new era in our story and bringing our British heritage and expertise to a new generation of American wine and spirits enthusiasts.
