Understanding Provenance in Fine Wine
Spend any time comparing fine wine prices online, and you will notice that what appears to be the same bottle can be offered at quite different price levels.
On paper, the comparison looks straightforward. The producer, the wine and the vintage are identical. And yet, the price is not.
The difference is usually provenance.
At its simplest, provenance is the record of a wine’s life after it leaves the producer. Where it has been stored, how it has been handled, and how often it has changed hands. This is especially important for mature bottles.
Wine is sensitive to its environment. Temperature variation, poor storage and repeated transport are just a few variables that can greatly affect a bottle’s development. The difficulty is that these changes are not always visible; a bottle can appear perfectly sound but show poorly when opened.
This is where the price discrepancy begins to make more sense. Wines offered at lower prices will often come with less clarity around their history. That does not necessarily mean there is an issue, but it does introduce uncertainty. When provenance is unclear, market prices adjust accordingly to reflect that.
The reverse is also true. When a wine has been sourced directly from the producer, or stored professionally throughout its life, there is a greater degree of confidence in how it will perform. That confidence carries a premium.
For merchants, this is largely a question of sourcing and storage. At Berry Bros. & Rudd, most of the wines we offer are acquired directly from the estate or have been stored professionally by us since the release of the wine.
The comparison then comes down to not just two identical wines, but two different levels of confidence. With fine wine, particularly as bottles age, that distinction becomes increasingly important. The price reflects not only what the wine is, but how confident you can be that it will show at its best when opened.
