2012 Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Denis Mortet, Burgundy
This is a blend from younger vineyards, averaging 40 years, with 25% new oak. It is so dense that it’s almost stern, yet there is a wonderful, succulent fruit behind, and a perfectly poised structure.
Jasper Morris MW, Burgundy Wine Director
Classic Gevrey Chambertin from over 20 plots in Gevrey Chambertin combining all aspect and soil types. The vines are old (40-45 years) with 25% new oak. For a village wine this has extraordinary precision and richness with abundant dark fruit at the core and a spicy lift at the finish. If I had this blind, I would think it was premier Cru.
Fine Wine Team
Arnaud Mortet characterises 2012 as having a small yield, between 25 and 35 hl/ha, with good maturity and ripe tannins while retaining acidity: “A very Burgundy vintage”. Since his father’s time, Arnaud has reduced the amount of new oak, a program which he began in 2008 and has accelerated quite substantially for 2012 – and extracts more gently. Maybe some markets will prefer the previous style but we are convinced that Arnaud is making wines of absolute brilliance now as a result of his intelligent fine-tuning.
