Description
Opus One was established as a joint venture between the late Robert Mondavi and the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The 2005 has an elegantly restrained nose of cassis and cedar - elegant and subtle. This elegance is once again clear on the palate, as chocolate notes and dark cherries are underpinned by a very fine, well integrated tannic structure that carries through to a long, peppery finish. This is not your stereotypical Californian cabernet - this is far more elegant, far less concentrated and far more complex. This is a must have, especially when equivalent quality Bordeaux first growths are now out of reach for most pockets.

96/100
Concentrated, intense yet gentle at this point, with the tannins beginning to be truly supple and generous. Dried roses and raspberry fruits on the attack, olive paste, rosemary, sandalwood and grilled black pepper as it opens up. Gorgeous stuff, from one of the longest recorded growing seasons at Opus, with harvest finishing on November 2.
Drink 2022 to 2044.

The opaque purple-hued 2005 exhibits an extraordinary nose of violets, creme de cassis, charcoal, and spring flowers. Gorgeously pure, opulently full-bodied, with sweet tannins, superb concentration, and a low acid, ripe, tannic finish, it tastes like a top-notch vintage of ripe Bordeaux, but made in California. It can be drunk now and over the next 20-25 years. Bravo!
