2020 Barolo, Castelletto, Mauro Veglio, Piedmont, Italy
Description
According to Alessandro, this vineyard has the highest proportion of limestone in Barolo, and so represents a Serralungan austerity and power (the limestone) married to Monforte’s muscle. The palate represents this exactly, with a lush overtone of dark fruit, cinched by a belt of fine-grained tannins. The wine appears both hedonistic and understatedly assertive. The lick of spicy freshness that defines the vintage rounds out the finish.

Critics reviews
The 2020 Barolo Castelletto is one of the most closed wines in this range from Veglio. Then again, we are in Monforte. Veins of saline-infused dark fruit, crushed rocks, herbs, mint and coffee open with a bit of coaxing. Nervy, focused tannins wrap it all together in style. I would give the 2020 a few years to soften, as the tannins are quite imposing today. I love the sheer vibrancy here.
Drink 2025 - 2038
Precise, well-composed and spicy with aromas of forest berries, herbs, iron and dried orange peel. It’s medium- to full-bodied with chewy tannins. Rather firm yet it has a juicy core of succulent berries and cherries at the center. Focused finish with a sanguine character to it.
