2012 Barolo, Ester Canale Rosso, Vigna Rionda, Giovanni Rosso, Piedmont, Italy
Description
Only 1,457 made
Tasting the wine from the barrel, I was struck not by any particular aroma or flavour but by its elegant shape. Pale red/ruby in colour, the nose is reassuringly self-effacing; it’s understated, composed, and cultured, delicately perfumed with mulberry, a hint of menthol, and cool clove.
The palate is remarkable for its serenity, Maserati line, and persistence. The layers of tight, sweet-berried fruit and spice are barely discernible, racy with cleansing acidity, framed by the finest tannins. Compared with vintage 2011, Vigna Rionda 2012 is more classical, with cooler, delicate aromatics that become fragrant on the palate. It’s a good wine.

Davide Rosso’s 2012 Barolo Vigna Rionda is a pretty, mid-weight wine. Bright and floral, the 2012 possesses mid-weight structure and modest depth. Moreover, the signatures that make Rionda one of the world’s most pedigreed vineyards never develop. Even taking into account the personality of the vintage, Rosso’s 2012 Vigna Rionda captures only a fraction of the true potential of this great Serralunga site. And that is a shame because Rosso owns what is widely considered the heart of the vineyard. My most recent bottle of the 2012 was quite a bit different than those I tasted a few months ago, which suggests the earlier bottles may have been damaged in transport or storage.
