Description

St Julien is renowned for producing wines which combine the finesse and aromatic appeal of Margaux with the more muscular power and depth of Pauillac, and this wine is a classic example of its origin. Try it with fillet steak.

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. Dark garnet in colour, this has a ripe, vibrant bouquet with boysenberry, briary and cedarwood. Very fine delineation with a background scent of blackberry pastille. The first bottle had a slightly scrawny finish, but the second is far more representative with fine, tensile tannins, ripe blackberry, graphite and cedar with great precision and length on the finish. Excellent.
Tobacco, spice box, cedar, and black currants offer a perfumed, complex introduction to this structured, beefy, muscular St.-Julien. As usual, a battle between the fruit and structure is being waged in this 2001, which appears to be a bit broader and more charming than most Langoa Bartons.
